Train the trainers - coming soon

If teaching code was easy, the world would be a very different place.

Coming soon...

We are still getting our ducks in a row on this aspect of volunteering. We are just gauging interest for now. So please tell us if you are interested!

Introduction

Teaching is a skill. It can be learned and practiced, and teachers typically benefit from training and feedback.

Our teacher training has 2 main components. A syllabus and feedback. Volunteers will be invited to take part in both.

Teaching syllabus

We have a short teaching syllabus based on the excellent "Teach Like a Champion" book. You will be given access to this syllabus and some exercises early on. You can move through this syllabus at your own pace. It is not critical that you become a super-expert in the TLAC principles, but it would be useful for you to have some familiarity because it gives us a common language.

Feedback sessions

Any staff member or volunteer taking part in any kind of teaching session is required to record some of their sessions for feedback.

Initially, you will be asked to simply give feedback to other teachers. You will be taking note of what they did well and badly. You'll then need to share your feedback with a designated "feedback coordinator".

The feedback coordinator will then take all the feedback on a specific session and run a larger feedback session so that multiple people can learn from the feedback. We know that getting feedback in a public setting can be scary for a lot of people, but worry not! The coordinators know what's up and the session is designed to be constructive and thought-provoking.

Timing

Week 1: We will give you access to the syllabus and a few recordings of feedback sessions so you can start seeing what to expect.

Week 2+3: We will share a few session recordings from other teachers, these might be staff or other volunteers. You will be asked to share feedback with the coordinator. You will be asked to attend the final feedback session so that you can see how your feedback fits into the larger picture.

Week 4+5+6: You will start running sessions yourself :) We will continue asking you to give others feedback. People tend to be a bit clumsy in the beginning, so we will hold off on giving you feedback while you overcome your own teething problems

Week 7+: We will start giving you feedback on your own recordings
